Welcome to 2021! 2020 was filled with so many challenges at home, in and around work, worldwide, politics and more. Last year reinforced something I was taught as a young man and still believe to this very day: The strong get stronger when times are tough.

When the world is throwing challenge after challenge at our lives it is up to us as leaders to rise up, to share our visions, and to help those around us to stay the course. Like for generations before us, there have always been tough times, challenging circumstances, fear of the unknown, and political divides.

Granted, sometimes it feels like this is happening to us for the very first time. Sorry to inform you, but while it may seem that way, I can attest that history, science and faith validates that our world has been in movement forever. Therefore, it is our responsibility to stay the course. It’s our duty to our businesses, our clients, our employees and our families to have Plan A, B and C if needed. So, help those close to us to stay on their paths. Never forget you have the ability to make a real difference in the lives of others.

The title I used for this issue’s column is a quote from entrepreneur and innovator Elon Musk when he was told he was now richer than Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and his business was more valuable than Facebook. His answer shows he knows where his time, energy, love and productivity should remain.

Elon’s answer is a great example of what we should get better at, and that is maintaining our focus and not allowing forces outside of our control to influence our decisions. We must stay strong on three pillars – mind, body, and soul. And when we do this, we are almost unstoppable.

So, for those of you who haven’t yet made and shared your plans, goals, or behaviors for 2021 with your work team, family team and possibly your community team, then there’s no time like the present. Seriously, get to it. Write them down, share them and then execute.

And when 2021 throws a monkey wrench into the works, may I simple suggest we remember Elon’s quote and say: “How strange ... back to work!”

Oh, on a final note, as of late March Tesla stock moved from 89$ to $900 and back to $660 per share in just 12 months. I’ve got to say, it really looks like Elon is on to something.
